Functional architecture of naming dice, digits, and number words
نویسندگان
چکیده
Five chronometric experiments examined the functional architecture of naming dice, digits, and number words. Speakers named pictured dice, Arabic digits, or written number words, while simultaneously trying to ignore congruent or incongruent dice, digit, or number word distractors presented at various stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). Stroop-like interference and facilitation effects were obtained from digits and words on dice naming latencies, but not from dice on digit and word naming latencies. In contrast, words affected digit naming latencies and digits affected word naming latencies to the same extent. The peak of the interference was always around SOA 1⁄4 0 ms, whereas facilitation was constant across distractor-first SOAs. These results suggest that digit naming is achieved like word naming rather than dice naming. WEAVERþ þ simulations of the results are reported.

Asymmetries in the processing of Arabic digits and number words.
Numbers can be represented as Arabic digits ("6") or as number words ("six"). The present study investigated potential processing differences between the two notational formats. In view of the previous finding (e.g., Potter & Faulconer, 1975) that objects are named slower, but semantically categorized faster, than corresponding words, it was investigated whether a similar interaction between st...
متن کاملThe Influences of Different Number Languages on Numeracy Learning
Number naming systems connect number words to quantities. For example, in English, the word eleven is used for the quantity that is also represented as 11 in Arabic digits. Number naming systems include words for both small (e.g., one, three) and large quantities (e.g., hundred, thousand), plus rules for combining them (e.g., 346 is three hundred and forty-six). Because each language has its ow...
متن کاملComparative Effectiveness of Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) and Phonological Components Analysis (PCA) for Anomia Treatment in Persian Speaking Patients With Aphasia
Objectives: Anomia is one of the most common and persistent symptoms of aphasia. Although treatments of anomia usually focus on semantic and/or phonological levels, which both have been demonstrated to be effective, the relationship between the underlying functional deficit in naming and response to a particular treatment approach remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the rela...
متن کاملThe Relationship between English and Persian Phonological Awareness, Rapid Autamatized Naming and Students’ Reading Achievement in Partial Immersion and Non-Immersion Programs
The cognitive predictors (i.e.,Phonological Awareness, and Rapid Automatized Naming) underlying reading achievement have not been researched in Iranian partial English immersion and non-immersion programs. The present study sought to investigate the relationship between English and Persian Phonological Awareness (PA), Rapid Autamatized Naming (RAN) and reading achievementof Iranian students in ...
متن کاملSemantic Feature Analysis Treatment for Anomia of Two Nonfluent Persian-Speaking Aphasic Patients
Objectives: Semantic Feature Analysis was designed to improve lexical retrieval of aphasic patients via activation of semantic networks of the words. In this approach, the anomic patients are cured with semantic information to assist oral naming. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Semantic Feature Analysis treatment on anomia of two nonfluent aphasic patients. Methods: A...
